This young man and woman seemed to be writing a computer program, or perhaps building a website, as they sat in a shady area off to the side of the people waiting in line … I didn’t get close enough to them to see exactly what they were up to …

Silly me: after the iPhone 3g had been out for a full week, I thought I could stroll right into the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue & 59th Street in mid-town Manhattan, and simply buy one without any muss, fuss, bother, or delay.

But when I arrived at 11 AM, I found a line of approximately 150 people waiting outside in the broiling sun, not seeming to move forward at all; it turned out that the Apple store "concierge" folks were letting them in in groups of ten, when the previous ten had been taken care of. When I asked the woman how long she had been waiting, she said, "Four hours" — she had arrived at 7 AM, having already determined that the AT&T stores were sold out throughout New Jersey and Connecticut.

Well, I’m a gadget freak and a Mac fan, but there’s a limit to my passion for such things; four hours was just too much. So instead, I decided to take a bunch of pictures of the people who were in the line. Of course, I have no idea whethere the people queued up in front of Apple stores in other cities (or at other stores here in NYC) are similar to this group … but I’m inclined to think that they are. And if that’s true, then the demographics of this group — in terms of age, gender, nationality, ethnic groups, etc. — is particularly intriguing. I saw only one guy dressed in a corporate uniform of suit and tie; Apple may be trying to break into the "enterprise" market, but that’s not who was standing in line for all those hours in the sun…

Are you looking to increase traffic to your website? Does your online business need more exposure than it’s currently getting? To jump start your business and see your number of online visitors skyrocket, try using an online website directory service.

An online website directory service is a website that features every type of business imaginable. From dog food to florists, all of the business websites are neatly categorized into headings and subheadings.

The category system of organization helps the online website directory to be as user friendly as possible. It offers up a wealth of information in a manner that is easy to understand.

It is important for web surfers to find the information they desire quickly and easily. Website directories are constructed to make a visitor’s experience convenient and hassle free. The pleasant experience a potential customer encounters when using a website directory will directly affect their overall impression of your business.

If you are affiliated with a directory that is well-designed and easy to use, it makes your business look professional. If you are listed on a sub-par site that is cluttered and chaotic, it will make your business look unorganized and give a bad impression to your potential clients.

Often, the best online website directory service is one that listens to the needs of its visitors. For instance, if a web surfer sees that a new category is needed for a certain group of businesses, the website should make it easy for them to submit their suggestions.

After all, their ease of use on the website translates into web traffic for their valued advertisers. Make sure the online directory you choose to list your business with cares about the satisfaction of their visitors.

Many online website directory services also allow their users to rank and review the websites they frequent. If you have a particularly good website, listing it on a directory service is a must. It will earn you the positive feedback that your online content deserves.

Another convenient feature that is offered by a good online website directory service is a search tool. Imagine if a potential client was looking for your website through the directory, but couldn’t remember the exact name of your business. The client could simply go back to the directory and type in as much of your business’ name as could be remembered.

Because there are far fewer competitors listed in an online website directory than in a huge search engine, clients are far more likely to find your website again. In this manner, an online website directory service makes you easier to find online than lots of the competition.

In fact, some directories offer more than a simple, standard search feature. The best directories offer an advanced search option, sometimes called a power search, that allows visitors to search by a person’s name, e-mail address or business category. This is very useful if a potential client can remember your e-mail address, but not your business’ name or phone number.

Often, you can add your business’ website to an online directory service for free. The directory will provide you with a back link to your website at no cost to you, just like registering your domain name for free with the major search engines. So, if there’s no charge, listing your website on a directory is a no-brainer.

New York Public Library #5
Website Directory
April 13th, 2006 – New York, United States

When I visited New York in April 2006 – I like to try to get there at least once a year if I can, so invigorating and exciting do I find it – I had hardly taken a photograph in six months. I wandered the streets looking for the iconic (or, failing that, the stereotypical) Big Apple shots, and though I half-heartedly took one or two snaps of a young man leaning against a wall on 5th Avenue playing the saxophone, with the Empire State Building looming in the background, I found I hadn’t quite got my street photography mojo back. It had taken me a long time to get up the courage to take candid shots in public back in Geneva less than a year earlier, and not having done so for so long, I reverted to my natural discretion and self-consciousness.

Eventually I decided to give up and went into the New York public library behind Bryant Park, where, ironically, an exhibition of street photography was being shown. Once I had been round the exhibition I explored more of the magnificent building with its astonishing grandeur and gorgeous artworks. Finally, exhausted – I had walked over 120 blocks in the day – I sat down on the bench opposite the one in this picture with the intention merely of resting, only to have my photographer’s instinct ignited by the arrival of a young Japanese couple.

This and the next photo of the couple in black and white may not strictly speaking be considered street photographs, but to me they represent the best I have so far achieved in the genre.

Click here to view large on black – I’m not sure it’s better, but I’ll leave you to decide.

You’ve built a brand new website for your business and you’re really excited. However, you have to do something to get the word out and you’re not sure what to do. You know that you can post flyers all over your town or simply tell your friends, but that’s not going to do much for you. So what are you going to do?

Well, you’re going to start with a website directory. The website directory is an effective way to combat the always changing algorithms of search engines and to really get an edge on the competition. Basically, you need to do all that you can to ensure that you are marketing your site correctly and a website directory is going to help you do that. You’re going to be able to battle some of the hardships of Internet marketing is you use a directory to get the word out.

Using the directory

Another thing that is special about submitting your website to a website directory is that you get a free back link to your website. The back link is very important because the more links you have on the web, the better off your site is. This means it is going to be indexed by search engine spiders.

You see, search engine spiders follow these links to your site and then they index your site. The more links you have out there, the more your site is going to be indexed. This means that you’ll show up higher in the search engine results when someone searches for what it is you are offering your customers and potential customers.

As for how the directory works, it is a place in which the websites are compiled into categories. They are also divided up into subcategories to make searching easier. Because these categories are divided up into subcategories, the search engine spiders recognize them. Needless to say, these directories are visited by search engine spiders more than many other sites. This is because of the quality of the back links. The back links are of a high quality at these sites, which is why you need to utilize a website directory.

Choosing the right website directory

Choosing the right website directory doesn’t have to be difficult. There are some things that you have to look for in order to make that determination. Those things are:

To pay or not to pay – There are pay directories and there are free directories. Determine which is best for you. Free directories still provide you with that back link. It is true there will be a lot more sites posted there, but they are effective.

Check the page rank – Check the page rank of the website directory. That way, you know that it is a popular site. You can also check into sites to see how they are growing. If a site is growing, then that is a sign that it is a popular directory that is emerging. You definitely want to get in on that.

Look at both general and specific directories – You want to do this because both can be effective. You can post on a specific directory and post on a general directory. This will broaden the exposure that your site gets.

You don’t have to be restricted to just one website directory. You can use all sorts of website directories. This is important in getting those high quality back links that will make your site successful. There is not a rule anywhere that says you’re only allowed to post your website to a single website directory. If there were, then it would be impossible for a lot of sites to be successful on the Internet.

Submission options

You also have submission options. These options are manual, using submission software, and using a directory submission service. The directory submission service may use software or do it manually. However, there are article directories out there that will not accept submissions from software. They want to ensure that real people are doing the posting. Many of these directories have real people approving the submissions, so it is hard if they have to approve thousands of submissions submitted by these software programs. It happens, but it is a good idea to do it manually. If you don’t have time to do it yourself, look into the directory submission service.

How to maximize the benefits

It isn’t enough to simply post your website link up on a website directory. There are ways in which you can maximize the benefits. It will be worth your while to follow these tips so that you can make sure that you profit from your efforts:

If you’re submitting to more than one website directory, you need to vary your description. Don’t use the same description for every directory.

Make sure the text that accompanies your website link is really good stuff. That means you want it to draw people in. You want them to click on your link. Believe it or not, people browse website directories, especially if they’re looking for a website that focuses on certain material.

Make as many submissions as possible to website directories. Make sure they are directories that you can track back easily. Make sure they are easy to manage as well. You don’t want to go for directories that are hard to follow.

Make sure that you choose directories that will also allow you to submit the links to your inner pages. This allows for better indexing and will also allow more people to find you.

After this, you might as well give your website a pair of running shoes. This is because it is going to take off like wildfire. It is going to run like the wind. It is important that you be prepared, because the moment you start submitting your site is the moment that it enters the race of website popularity.

Australasian Law Awards gets some entertainment and wow factor with Human Statue Bodyart judge living statues at Sydney Town Hall…

The ALB Australasian Law Awards is the premier awards event for the Australian and New Zealand legal industry. It brings together under one roof more than 500 in-house counsels, private practitioners and industry leaders to celebrate excellence in the legal profession, recognising individuals, teams and companies for their outstanding achievements.

For the uninitiated, ALB stands for ‘Australasian Legal Business’, which is a leading trade publication from Thomson Reuters.

Last Thursday the awards came with some extra excitement and wow factor.

The legal world collaborated with the creative arts arts and entertainment world, as Sydney based Human Statue Bodyart created and provided 4 human statue ‘Living Judges’.

The prestigious event was so large that it took up two rooms. The human statues were in the ‘Vestibule’ room, while dinner for hundreds of guests was served in the adjoining ‘Centennial Hall’.

As far as we can ascertain, it was the first time that the Law Awards (or any other legal entity in Australia), has used human statues, living statues, or even done anything with bodypaint. From the excellent feedback received, it will not be the last time that the awards or legal sector in Australia uses statues from Human Statue Bodyart.

It’s understood that Thomson Reuters was the prime organiser of the event.

31 May 2013

Bell Gully’s 18-partner Corporate team was named New Zealand Deal Team of the Year at the 2013 ALB Australasian Law Awards held at the Sydney Town Hall on Thursday night.

The awards offered recognition of Bell Gully’s work on many of the leading transactions in 2012. The Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company building on West Seventh Street in Cincinnati, Ohio was completed in 1931. The Art Deco-style building was designed by Harry Hake, a Cincinnati architect.
The 12-story builidng was designed with floor heights of at least 12 feet to house the new telephone equipment.

A decorative border above the second story is lined with niches in which cut-stone French telephones alternate with headphones. Communication is further symbolized by several reliefs showing the ancient runner, Alexander Bells’s first telephone effort, flag signaling from a ship, and conventional representations of a woman with a hare, swan, and hawk. In the ornate marble lobby are gold-and-silver metal reliefs of figures symbolizing man’s art, industry, and conquest of space.

The Cincinnati Bell Telephone Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

www.cincinnatibell.com/aboutus/history/
The City and Suburban Telegraph Company, later Cincinnati Bell Telephone, was officially incorporated on July 5, 1873, becoming the first company in the city to provide direct communication between the city`s homes and businesses. Manufacturer and philanthropist Andrew Erkenbrecher became the company`s first president in 1874. Rates were fixed at 0 a year for one line.

By mid-1877, when the telephone was first demonstrated in Cincinnati, the Association was maintaining about 50 private telegraph lines between offices and plants or residences. Customers were equipped with a simple telegraph instrument and a code book, and young men who pedaled foot treadles served as operators and powered the call bells.

In September 1878, the City and Suburban Association signed a contract with the Bell Telephone Company of Boston (the nation`s first telephone service and manufacturing company) for a license to furnish Bell telephone service in the Queen City area. The Association then became the exclusive agent for Bell telephones within a 25-mile radius of Cincinnati.

Located at the corner of Fourth and Walnut streets downtown, Bell Telephonic Exchange was the first telephonic exchange in Ohio and the 10th in the nation. In 1879, the first telephone directory was published and the first line extended across the Suspension Bridge to Covington, Ky. Women, or "hello girls" who had to memorize all callers` names, took the place of men as operators, and 25 employees served more than 1,000 customers. A total of 145,392 calls had been recorded for the year.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cincinnati_Bell
Cincinnati Bell is one of only two American companies that continue to actively promote itself under the "Bell" name. As of August 2006, Cincinnati Bell has ceased all public usage of the last Bell logo, designed in 1969 by Saul Bass, simply opting to use a stylized, shadowed version of its corporate name on its website. The company had already removed the Bell logo from its telephone directories’ covers for some time.

The newsmagazine 60 Minutes reported in 1989 that Cincinnati Bell cooperated with local police to wiretap local residents in search of alleged communist or criminal activity from 1972 to 1984.

It is not easy to determine whether to go with free or paid web hosting companies. It boils down to what your needs are and how much you expect them to grow within a certain period of time. There are certain obvious benefits that come with a free web hosting directory and also a few setbacks. Let’s get into it and look at the merits of free FTP.

Most noteworthy about the benefits of free hosting is that it does not lay any financial burden on the client. The free hosting is a great choice for personal websites and small business websites that are looking to make a name on the Internet. The providers provide fertile ground for Internet startups that have yet to start selling to online clients.

Another benefit is that free asp.net web hosting is often available and it is a great tool for upcoming programmers to sharpen their skills. Common programming languages including: ASP, CGI/Perl, PHP, JSP, and ColdFusion are often supported by providers with varying levels of support. A good website that provides a free hosting directory such as Freehosting1.net allows access to these languages and helps you to take advantage of the features of companies; one often needs to pay a small fee to utilize premium features.

Jumping into paid directories, you can easily remove any type of advertising from the website as long as you don’t want it. You can also benefit from having your own domain name instead of having your website reside in a sub-domain. Needless to say that search engine visibility is enhanced by having a distinct domain to represent your company.

The providers have round-the-clock support. Highly customizable control panels are usually provided by paid web hosts. With the control panels you can view important web statistics, protect certain parts of the website with passwords, and create web-based email accounts. It goes without saying that you can get free ftp with unlimited bandwidth from a majority of web hosts.

One minor setback about using a web host from a free web hosting directory is that you are not allowed to specify the advertisements that will appear on your website. Also, freely hosted websites are included in sub-domains which makes them rank poorly in search engines. Support is not available round the clock with free web hosts and this makes it difficult to deal with problems as they occur.

It comes with a major disadvantage. There is a varying amount of financial investment needed in order to secure the services of hosting company. Depending on the functionality that you want to incorporate into your website, you have to pay additional sums of money to upgrade the package. Many fully-featured packages can set you back a considerable amount of money. So for these reasons and more, free web hosting directories are more often than not a better method of having a place to put your website rather than paid directories.

My Cyber Social Map

My social online presence.
By Frank Da Silva

A social network service uses software to build online social networks for communities of people who share interests and activities or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

Most services are primarily web based and provide a collection of various ways for users to interact, such as chat, messaging, email, video, voice chat, file sharing, blogging, discussion groups, and so on. Social networking has revolutionized the way we communicate and share information with one another in today’s society. Various social networking websites are being used by millions of people everyday on a regular basis and it now seems that social networking is a part of everyday life.

The main types of social networking services are those which contain directories of some categories (such as former classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages), and recommender systems linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with MySpace and Facebook being the most widely used in North America, Bebo, MySpace, Skyrock Blog , Facebook and Hi5 in parts of Europe, Orkut and Hi5 in South America and Central America, Friendster, Orkut and CyWorld in Asia and the Pacific Islands. Le Monde provided a detailed map of popularity, January 14, 2008.

There are, quite literally, millions and millions of web sites on the web today, and most small businesses find it a constant struggle to be found among all the competition. One method that many of these webmasters have found to raise their exposure within a cost effective method, is through web directory submissions. If you have a small business website and have been experiencing difficulty building traffic to it, then web directory submission may help you get things moving within the right direction by explaining what web directories are, why they are good for your business, and how best to use them.

What Is A business website directory?

A web directory is a website devoted entirely to collecting infos about other sites and categorise then based on their specific niche. A business directory limits itself to business web sites just. These directories, and there are thousands of them, assign each website a small plot of virtual real estate on their website that will contain a brief description, a link to the website, and possibly a screen shot image of the website’s homepage. All of this infos is then organized into a database that can be searched by category, name, or sometimes even geographic location or region. So far they don’t sound much different from a search engine, do they?

The main difference among a business website directory and a search engine is that while a search engine simply returns a bunch of robot collected links, a web directory returns a list of human edited entries with website descriptions. This means the sites you find through a directory have been reviewed, sorted and categorized by an impartial editor before actually being placed on the website. This keeps the junk and spam sites to a minimum, and is why they are used by a lot of people.

Business web directories give a small business web website the ability to compete on a level playing field. While it is frequently really difficult to be found within the crowd of search engine results, the categories and geographic divisions of a directory make it easier for your potential customers to find you. In a web directory, all of the sites have an equal chance to stand out. Usually the easiest method to accomplish this is to spend the modest fee for a premium, or featured, listing. This means your listing will be at the top of the list and frequently have a larger font size. By purchasing a featured listing even a small website can stand out within the crowd.

How Do I Get My website Listed?

Getting your website listed within a business directory is really not complicated at all. Every business website directory will have a submission form somewhere on the website, almost linked to from a relatively prominent location on the homepage. To submit your website for approval, simply fill out the form with your website url, your E-mail address, and a short description of your website or business, then click the “submit” button. Your web directory submission then goes into the queue where an editor will eventually inspect your website and approve or reject the submission. Unfortunately though, you are just getting started.

To really use the web directory submission strategy to your advantage, you need to submit your website to many, many directories. While the submission process itself is fairly simple and straightforward, it can become tedious and time consuming when you start talking about adding to hundreds, or even thousands, of directories. I decided last week to create a new site.

This usually means registering a new domain name and getting web hosting.

However, you don’t need to do this.

Instead I decided to create a virtual directory on the main site and setup the new website as a sub-folder.

This saved me the usual setup fees and allowed me to keep this sub-site under the umbrella of the main site.

Australia Day 2012 At Bondi Beach, Sydney – Havaianas Thong Challenge

About 120,000 Australians enjoyed much of their Australia Day at Bondi Beach today, with over 1000 purchasing giant Havaianas thongs.

The overcast conditions prevented the participants from breaking last years world record of 2068 giant inflatable Havaianas in a line but there was no shortage of enthusiasm.

North Bondi foundation nipper Paul Mangioni and current nipper Duke Wieland didn’t let the wet weather and muggy conditions stop them from having a go.

Bondi Beach, Bronte, and Tamarama beaches and parks were all alcohol-free zones, in a preventive measure to stop any trouble before it started – thong bearer or not.

This years Havaianas Thong Challenge was a little different – From the beach to the backyard was the pitch.

The thong challenge organisers are keen to see your photos from the beach with their thong and photos can be submitted via their Havaianas Australia Facebook.

If you want to attract web traffic and ensure a better ranking for your website in search engine results, you must seriously consider submitting your website to a popular website directory. There is an array of benefits that such submissions have to offer. Following is a brief rundown on it.

*One Way Links

There are several factors that are taken into account to determine the ranking of your website in search engine results. The number of inbound links is one of the most important factors in this regard. The more inbound links your website has, the better search engine ranking it enjoys. The submission of your site to web directories does not require you to put their link on your website. Link exchange though also works, but search engines have recently started to discourage such strategies. The inbound links on the other hand are considered with high regard.

*Generating SEO Anchor Text Is Easy

When you submit your site to a web directory, you do not just enter the URL of the website, but also get an opportunity to include a site title and a brief summary of what your website is all about. If you optimize this description for search engines with suitable keywords, you can easily attract the attention of the search engine spiders. You can enter the anchor text of your choice in these directories. These SEO anchor texts can be very helpful in significantly improving your search engine rankings.

*It Helps In Getting Targeted Traffic

Online users these days use different methods to find the website of their interest. They not only use the search engines, but also look into directories. They trust a directory to provide them the references to best websites on Internet on a particular subject. The websites on these directories are categorized in different categories and sub-categories so that the users can experience easy navigation. They just have to enter the right categories to find the right websites. This way, you can get a convenient access to your target visitors. It is just that you will have to be a little careful while submitting your website here. Make sure that you choose the right category and sub-category.

*It Does Not Cost You Anything

The good thing is that all these benefits do not cost you anything. You do not have to pay any fee to submit your website to a directory. It is absolutely free. Even the process of submission is very easy. You do not have to be a technical expert or a programmer for this purpose. It does not take more than two minutes. However, it is advisable that you spend some time on preparing the anchor text to be used for the submission. The idea is to make sure that the anchor text is properly optimized with the right set of keywords. Avoid overuse of keywords because neither the search engine spiders nor human readers like stuffing of keywords in a senseless and unattractive way.

Overall, if you keep in mind a couple of things and follow the right approach, you can easily put your website on the track of success by submitting it into a good website directory.

Jasmine Directory is a paid business web directory. The review fee is not a guarantee that a website is going to be listed.

The very first impression is a “wow” effect, the website is clean and the colors are well matched. The navigation is simple, offering access to everything a visitor may be interested in once landed on this website.

Based on two sections, a topic and a regional section, Jasmine Directory provides an easy and interactive user experience when it comes to the submission process.

Jasmine Directory offers two types of reviews: Standard and Express. The difference between the two is narrowed down to the 5 deep-links Express listings may have. All Express listings are displayed above the Standard ones.

The directory was registered in 2009 – so it’s not very old – is included in Yahoo Directory, DMOZ, Business.com and other major directories. A blog is also featured, although it’s not updated frequently.

What takes apart this directory from the crowd?

Well, each main category and subcategory has its own unique article/description, making pages look more natural than just a bunch of hyperlinks. Relevant images in each category are also a nice touch. Each listing has its own details page featuring the website’s screenshot, business address, contact information and other details. The business address is shown in a Google generated map (this is useful especially for businesses), which, again, sets Jasmine Directory apart from other directories.

As soon as a website is listed in Jasmine Directory, the website details can be easily edited by its owner. An upgrade feature is also available for those who want to upgrade their listing from a Standard to an Express status.

Another positive side of JD, is that they reserve the right to edit a listing, or even move it to another category (if needed). This isn’t something I see every day, because, let’s face it, a web directory owner will list a website although the title uses the same keyword several times, instead of refunding the review fee.

What I don’t like about this particular business directory is the relatively low number of categories. Some sub-sections from a few main categories like Health, Travel or Society (to name a few) could really use more subcategories. However, they apply a high editorial discretion and I haven’t saw spammy titles and descriptions as we use to see often, which is again, a good sign for a directory given the fact that Matt Cutts clearly expressed Google’s view about paid web directories.

Jasmine Directory is heading to a very good direction and I’d like to see more directories like this out there.

What webmasters should understand is that the web directory industry is dead as we knew it a few years ago. A web directory accepting anything for a few bucks, is most certainly considered non-valuable. People basically pay a suggestion/review fee rather than a guaranteed inclusion fee.

As a note, Jasmine Business Web Directory, has made it in top 10 web directories for the 5th time by the top authority web directory review site: http://www.webdirectoryreviews.org/
