It surprises me that people don’t take advantage of local free directories when marketing their website. In Perth, where we are web designers we have a list of directories that we use all the time that are free.

The quickest way to find local website directories is to enter a few key phrases into google and look through about 10 pages of results. Look for website directory sites and put them into a list. If they show up in the results then Google thinks they are important. You could also type in key phrase and then the word directory after them e.g. plumber directory, That will likely display more sites. This list below is for people in Australia but using the logic above you will easily find the best local directories.

All of the following website are the names followed by DOTCOM DOTAU. Due to the rules associated with article directories, I can’t list the websites so that you can click on them. Anyway here they are:-

1 yellowpagesonline – They provide a free online listing although that doesn’t include a link back to your site but there are plenty of people using it for search purposes and we have been listed in a free local area guide which can also help with phone calls. They will of course ring you soon afterwards trying to upsell you to a paid listing, but you can politely refuse.

2 Hotfrog – This is a business directory in many countries and is used by many people to do searches but is also a favoured website in Google results and provides a link and gets you indexed fairly quickly as well.

3 Comeonaussie – This site is not as well known, but I have found that in many instances a listing appears within Google with the site listing within an hour. In a few low competition areas you can even be on the front page of google with just a comeonaussie listing. They also place you in 2 additional sites for free when you register.

4 Truelocal – This site is affiliated with yahoo local search and is referenced often in Google maps as a citation. You can even add reviews to make the listing stand out more as well.

5 Aussieweb – This takes a while to get listed but seems to show up in the results within a month or so.

6 Localbusinessguide – This is also often a good directory that seems to be growing larger as time goes by. It can be a bit patchy in the search results at times but it is free, so you can’t complain.

7 Dlook – This seems to work well in the eastern states of Australia but the people searching for web design business in perth with this directory is low.

8 Business – Only recently has this company come to my attention, but there is a big company behind it so I expect that it will continue to grow in stature.

There are always more directories to be found out there, but that should help your website along initially.

If you or your business needs help with online directories, talk to a Perth Web Designer 9350 9392 or visit the Perth Web Wizards website to get lots of information about Web Design and what it can do for you and your business.

Australasian Law Awards gets some entertainment and wow factor with Human Statue Bodyart judge living statues at Sydney Town Hall…

The ALB Australasian Law Awards is the premier awards event for the Australian and New Zealand legal industry. It brings together under one roof more than 500 in-house counsels, private practitioners and industry leaders to celebrate excellence in the legal profession, recognising individuals, teams and companies for their outstanding achievements.

For the uninitiated, ALB stands for ‘Australasian Legal Business’, which is a leading trade publication from Thomson Reuters.

Last Thursday the awards came with some extra excitement and wow factor.

The legal world collaborated with the creative arts arts and entertainment world, as Sydney based Human Statue Bodyart created and provided 4 human statue ‘Living Judges’.

The prestigious event was so large that it took up two rooms. The human statues were in the ‘Vestibule’ room, while dinner for hundreds of guests was served in the adjoining ‘Centennial Hall’.

As far as we can ascertain, it was the first time that the Law Awards (or any other legal entity in Australia), has used human statues, living statues, or even done anything with bodypaint. From the excellent feedback received, it will not be the last time that the awards or legal sector in Australia uses statues from Human Statue Bodyart.

It’s understood that Thomson Reuters was the prime organiser of the event.

31 May 2013

Bell Gully’s 18-partner Corporate team was named New Zealand Deal Team of the Year at the 2013 ALB Australasian Law Awards held at the Sydney Town Hall on Thursday night.

The awards offered recognition of Bell Gully’s work on many of the leading transactions in 2012. Last night’s wins reflected a total of nine finalist nominations for Bell Gully, more than were received by any other New Zealand law firm.

Roger Partridge, Chairman of Bell Gully, said the strong result reflected the firm’s ongoing efforts to deliver outstanding value and service to its clients in a competitive market.

"In a market where there is considerable choice, clients consistently select Bell Gully to advise on New Zealand’s biggest deals. "This result is a testament to strong client relationships, and we’d like to thank our clients for their ongoing support.”

The ALB awards recognise the key transactions in Australia and New Zealand in 2012 and the legal excellence among the firms that advised on them. The finalists were assessed against criteria including deal value, complexity, breadth and the degree to which the work involved groundbreaking, original legal techniques and structures.

It is not easy to determine whether to go with free or paid web hosting companies. It boils down to what your needs are and how much you expect them to grow within a certain period of time. There are certain obvious benefits that come with a free web hosting directory and also a few setbacks. Let’s get into it and look at the merits of free FTP.

Most noteworthy about the benefits of free hosting is that it does not lay any financial burden on the client. The free hosting is a great choice for personal websites and small business websites that are looking to make a name on the Internet. The providers provide fertile ground for Internet startups that have yet to start selling to online clients.

Another benefit is that free web hosting is often available and it is a great tool for upcoming programmers to sharpen their skills. Common programming languages including: ASP, CGI/Perl, PHP, JSP, and ColdFusion are often supported by providers with varying levels of support. A good website that provides a free hosting directory such as allows access to these languages and helps you to take advantage of the features of companies; one often needs to pay a small fee to utilize premium features.

Jumping into paid directories, you can easily remove any type of advertising from the website as long as you don’t want it. You can also benefit from having your own domain name instead of having your website reside in a sub-domain. Needless to say that search engine visibility is enhanced by having a distinct domain to represent your company.

The providers have round-the-clock support. Highly customizable control panels are usually provided by paid web hosts. With the control panels you can view important web statistics, protect certain parts of the website with passwords, and create web-based email accounts. It goes without saying that you can get free ftp with unlimited bandwidth from a majority of web hosts.

One minor setback about using a web host from a free web hosting directory is that you are not allowed to specify the advertisements that will appear on your website. Also, freely hosted websites are included in sub-domains which makes them rank poorly in search engines. Support is not available round the clock with free web hosts and this makes it difficult to deal with problems as they occur.

It comes with a major disadvantage. There is a varying amount of financial investment needed in order to secure the services of hosting company. Depending on the functionality that you want to incorporate into your website, you have to pay additional sums of money to upgrade the package. Many fully-featured packages can set you back a considerable amount of money. So for these reasons and more, free web hosting directories are more often than not a better method of having a place to put your website rather than paid directories.

Australia Day 2012 At Bondi Beach, Sydney – Havaianas Thong Challenge

About 120,000 Australians enjoyed much of their Australia Day at Bondi Beach today, with over 1000 purchasing giant Havaianas thongs.

The overcast conditions prevented the participants from breaking last years world record of 2068 giant inflatable Havaianas in a line but there was no shortage of enthusiasm.

North Bondi foundation nipper Paul Mangioni and current nipper Duke Wieland didn’t let the wet weather and muggy conditions stop them from having a go.

Bondi Beach, Bronte, and Tamarama beaches and parks were all alcohol-free zones, in a preventive measure to stop any trouble before it started – thong bearer or not.

This years Havaianas Thong Challenge was a little different – From the beach to the backyard was the pitch.

The thong challenge organisers are keen to see your photos from the beach with their thong and photos can be submitted via their Havaianas Australia Facebook.

2012 Beach activities included:

Havaianas Paddle Challenge (Paddling Race)
Havaianas Dash For Thongs (Beach Flags)
Giant Havaianas Relay (Running Race)

Most folks were happy just to enjoy a swim and have a bit of a sun bake, with the organisers there garner publicity.

Having a go is the Aussie way, so well done to everyone for spending some time at beautiful Bondi Beach today.

When it comes to internet marketing, a very usual concept of popularizing the website is through the submission in a web directory.

A web directory is a link directory on the World Wide Web which is categorized in nature. A directory is a way of linking to other web sites based on categories and sub categories. The categorization of web sites listed is done on the basis of defined set of categories.

While submitting a web site link, a form is usually used to fill in the details of the website and the submission is generally based on editors who review the content of the link submitted. The relevancy of the link determines the validity of the submission i.e. if a real estate link is submitted to (say) Jewelry category of a web directory, the link would not be accepted and will invalidate the submission.

Directories are basically of three types: Free, Paid and Reciprocal. As the name suggests, free directories take in the information as such and allows your site to get listed in the relevant category. The only disadvantage to this type of submission is that it does not provide a permanent link back to your site. Your link will be moved to a page with no page rank or is removed after sometime. Paid directories, on the other hand, charge a nominal fee which helps in assuring that your link is placed in the relevant category. Reciprocal directory submissions demand a link back for your link. The selection of a web directory depends upon the search engine friendliness of the directory. The quality of a website directory is another important criterion to look for as a low quality directory can leave a negative impact on the site submitted. It is always beneficial to select industry specific web directory for submission.

For the purpose of submitting your site link, you need to create a valid email account in the directory so as to avoid spam or to make directory editors notify you of any concerns with your link submissions.

This is a doll of Mirai Suenaga – a project which I’ve been working on for the past half year. You can see how she was made in this post – many people thought it was an April fools ^^;

Through the production of Mirai, I will be highlighting the various factories that I use to make her so that not only Japanese creators but you too can use the small factories in Japan to create your own dolls and figures. Dolls are made using a technique called slush casting – the moulds are much cheaper than injection casting and is just about affordable for many individuals.

I will be creating a website which has a directory of factories. The plan is for me to visit these factories one by one and take photos of their facilities – then stick them up on the website.

I also plan to have a directory of producers who speak Japanese & English too so that you can go through them if you dont speak the lingo or cant travel to Japan often. I’m also going to have a list of job openings for folks who are interested in working in one of these small factories.

If you are planning to start earning money through affiliate programs, then you will need to visit an affiliate program directory first. An affiliate website directory is a very useful website where you can find everything that you will need to start an affiliate program. The directory can help you find the best affiliate programs to earn money from your website.

So, what information can you find on an affiliate program directory?

1. A list of various types of affiliate programs. 2. A list of the best or recommended affiliate programs. It can be easily overwhelming to look at an affiliate programs directory which has a thousand programs. Where do you start? How do you pick the one to sign up with? Affiliate program directories make this easy for you by listing the top-rated programs. Some affiliate program directory owners also list their ‘top pick’ programs. This is helpful, but just be mindful of any biased recommendation, so make your own assessment of the programs. Some affiliate program directories list programs with the best and most-rewarding commission structure.

Affiliate program directories have forums which you can join and learn from other successful affiliates, and get any help or support you need from other affiliates.

4. List your own affiliate program on the affiliate program directory. You can also list your own affiliate program in the affiliate program directory. Because the directory is the starting point for a lot of people planning to be affiliates, listing your own affiliate program in the directory ensures that you will get an opportunity to get some sub-affiliate sign-ups, and earn some commission.

Your website is complete and looks great now you want everyone to know about it. What is the next step? How do you reach as many people as you can to make sure everyone will find your website? Hire a plane and have it streaming a banner with your website on it? Well that is of course an option however there are some other alternatives that may prove less expensive and more rewarding as far as business results are concerned. How then do you get your website noticed and as quickly as possible? One of the first steps is to use website directories to get your website out to as many people as possible. A website directory works effectively to allow search engines to locate your site and gives you a chance to get ahead of your competition.

So what is so great about submitting your website to a directory, the benefit is that you will get a link back to your website from the directory and you can get it for free. A link back to your website is important because the more links you have back to your site will increase the rating of your site and it will be indexed by what are called search engine spiders. What the spiders do is they follow links from site to site and when your site is one of those sites then they index your site. Sites that are indexed show up higher in search engine results when people are searching for your products or services on a directory. Therefore you are getting to reach more of your potential customers by showing up higher in the index than other sites that have less links.

So now how do the directories work? Well, a directory is a list of websites that are placed into categories and subcategories relevant to the business or service they provide. The subcategories allow for much easier search of the information that your potential customers will be looking for. When you list in subcategories this makes it much easier for the search engine spiders to locate them. Search engine spiders visit directories much more than they visit a lot of other sites and the reason for this is that the directories link back to the websites listed in their categories and subcategories. Therefore listing with a website directory gives you much higher quality of back links and more potential for your customers to find you.

How then do you choose the right website directory? It isn’t that difficult a concept, choosing the right directory, there are some considerations to make and these are firstly, do you pay the directory or do you use free directories? You are the only one that can decide that fact. Free directories will still give you the back links that you are aiming for. A good way to determine whether you will be noticed on a free directory is to check the page ranking of the directory itself to see if the website directory has a good ranking. Other options are to check the sites and see how they are growing, if you see a site is growing then it is a very good sign that it is a popular directory already, or is getting up there in the in terms of popularity. A site like this is a very good place to be included.

You will also find that there are specific directories, relative entirely to your business, or general directories which cover a variety of information. Both forms are effective in your purpose, so you should post on general and specific directories to increase your website exposure in general. Don’t feel you should be limited to one website directory, there are many and you can use as many as you wish. Your aim remember is to get your website noticed and get those quality back links to your website in turn making your website a higher ranking itself. There are no rules that limit the number of directories that you list with, only the directories themselves may have rules that do not allow you to list.

Another option is submissions. Submission options are a manual process and they use submission software through a directory submission service. Directory submission services may manually make submissions or they may also use software for the process. For Directory Submission Services this is more difficult because there are directories that will not allow submissions from software. The purpose being that they ensure that real human beings are making postings on their directory. The directories have real human beings approving their submissions and if they are receiving multitudes of submissions daily or weekly and are aware of how software submissions occur then almost always these submissions would be rejected. You can use software programs of course but just beware that this will not always work and therefore manual submissions are always a good idea as well. If you lack the time and dedication to improving your website then it would be a good idea for you to look into the services of a directory submission service, then they can do all of this work for you, allowing you the time you need to concentrate on providing the service or product you say you will in your new website.

The next step, get the maximum benefit. How do we go about that? Well just posting your website onto a directory is not enough you have to have more information than the details above to be successful in what you are doing. Firstly make sure that your website text information is high standard so that you will have people clicking on the link and coming to your site, it is not enough to just make submissions you need to have an interesting and people catching text used in your submission. An important point is that you must vary your descriptions; you should not be using the same description for every directory that you place submissions. People who are searching for specific products or information will browse the directory lists and not just click on the first available option if they can easily find something that provides more specific information to their requirements.

Now, make sure your information is good, make sure that you make as many submissions as you can to different website directories for maximum exposure. Make sure the directories allow the easy back link to your website and that they are easy to manage. There is no point submitting to a directory that is hard to follow. Check that the directories you are choosing will let you put in links to your inner web pages as well as this gives more chance for the people to find you with better indexing options.

So there are some tips pointers and hints for getting your website off and racing. The website marketing for all businesses is a tough place to get into and without the right tools many businesses do not get what they wanted to achieve from the websites. These pointers should help you get started and if you follow these tips you may find you far exceed your expectations for your new website. Good Luck to you!

Logos from Web 2.0 are caught in the web somewhere a starry night, clouds, science fiction landscapes of our inner space, the synapses of the brain, the virtual space that is not abstract, imagined or really real.

Web 2.0, is a term coined by Tim O’Reilly in 2004 for a series of conferences on a revivified Internet. O’Reilly (2005) in what is now considered to be his seminal article claimed that, “If Netscape was the standard bearer for Web 1.0, Google is most certainly the standard bearer for Web 2.0 (O’Reilly 2005). He contrasted Web 1.0 with Web 2.0 by citing examples: DoubleClick vs Google AdSense, Ofoto vs Flickr, Britannica Online vs Wikipedia, personal websites vs blogging, domain name speculation vs search engine optimization, page views vs cost per click, publishing vs participation, content management systems vs wikis directories (taxonomy) vs tagging (”folksonomy”) and stickiness vs syndication. The conceptual map his team devised provides a sketch of Web 2.0 showing social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies.

Although some argue that it does not exist as anything more than geek jargon, for this new user, it is a promising and surprising paradigm shift in the Internet and in software development. I began blogging using Web 2.0 freeware in September 2006. Numerous users like myself have access to sophisticated, ever-improving software technologies since the cost of development is shared among enthusiastic nerds and geeks (in a good way). Freeware on Web 2.0 is not proprietary by nature but is capable of generating huge profits because of the viral way in which users share in the development, marketing and growth of the product while improving connectivity and in content in the process.

If your goal in building your online business is to generate lots of organic search engine traffic, then it goes without saying that getting your website to rank well in the search engines is crucial. In order to get your website to rank well — whether it be an affiliate review style site, an information site, or simply a conventional blog — you must create a strong network of authoritative backlinks which serve as the foundation of your website’s credibility with the search engines. This is one of the key basics of offline search engine optimization (SEO).

A common question is whether or not it is necessary to submit your website to online directories to establish that foundation. The short answer is yes; particularly when you first launch your website or blog, submitting your website to online directories is an important and effective way to begin building backlinks. What follows is a brief overview of the process.

Directory submissions should be done methodically over a period of time — this is generally more effective than a single mass submission because it is more natural, which matters in the eyes of the search engines. In addition, assuming you are not going to pay for your directory listing, it can often take 90 days or more before your back links begin to appear. So it is important to get started building your backlinks early and often.

With most directories, you will only be able to submit your home page and you can only submit your website once. Take the time to change up your keywords and title so that not all of your directory submissions are the same. Target 3 or 4 keyword phrases and use those in your website directory listing title (your website name), rotating the keyword phrases from directory to directory. When you do this, you enhance the likelihood of your site being categorized by the search engines for more than one keyword out of the gate.

The value of listing with a directory is twofold. Firstly you have more opportunity to get the search engines to notice you, especially when you have an authoritative link from a high page rank website. Secondly, it helps the search engines sort out what your website is about based on the category under which you are listed in the directory… which can matter if your website is new and doesn’t yet have very many pages or content posts.

There are literally thousands of online directories, so it is important to realize that not all directories are created equal. A website’s page rank is a reflection of its authoritativeness in the eyes of Google. A link back from a high page rank site, let’s say a PR 6 as an example, carries much more weight in terms of the implied authority of your website than a back-link from a low page rank site.

Focus your attention over the first month or so on submitting to higher page rank directories — page rank 4 and up. Ideally, you will submit to between 200 and 300 directories over your first month, so take the time to find those higher page rank directories and manually submit to them.

The idea of submitting to 200 or 300 directories over your first month may sound like a lot of work. In some ways it is, although it is more tedious than difficult. An hour a day, a couple of times a week will get you there.
